Swiss marathon runner Gabriela Andersen-Scheiss is lowered to a gurney at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on August 5, 1984 after she finished the first-ever women’s marathon and collapsed at the finish line.
She had been severely dehydrated after missing the final water station, and the crowd was horrified as she stumbled and spasmed in the final 400m.
But she waved off medical assistance until she crossed the finish line, determined not to be disqualified.
For decades it was believed women were incapable to running marathon-distances.
The men’s event began at the Athens Olympics in 1896, which began in the town of Marathon and ended at the Olympic stadium.
